How to Make Time for Fitness Whilst Running a Business: Best in Class Insights from Sarah Kirk

Finding time to exercise whilst running your own business can be challenging and yet the benefits are plentiful. So how can you make it work for you?

In this Best in Class Insights article, certified personal trainer, Sarah Kirk (aka The Mummy PT), guides us on how to make time for fitness whilst running a business. Over to Sarah…

As a self-employed mum of two boys, I understand the challenges busy women face when it comes to finding time for fitness which is why I’m on a mission to help women become strong and feel empowered by their bodies.

I believe exercise is not all about weight loss, it is about accepting who you are and what your body can do for you. My holistic approach to training will get you on the road to discovering what your body is capable of.

I get it. Finding time to exercise whilst running your own business can be challenging and yet the benefits are plentiful. The usual tips like getting up earlier or squeezing in 10 minutes on your lunch break may not cut it for you - so how can you fit in fitness and make it work for you?

1. CREATE A PLAN

It sounds simple but this will stop you from wasting time and give you a quick start to any session. Write it down or have it on your phone ready to go!

2. KEEP IT SHORT

10 minutes a day really is enough to support your goals. Knowing it'll be over soon, you’ll be more likely to do it. Just bacause it’s short doesn’t mean it can’t be impactful; work hard for those 10 minutes and make them count. As you begin to enjoy the benefits of moving more, the chances are you’ll start to increase your workout time.

3. MOVE MORE

Walking is so underrated but it’s free and an amazing cardio workout. Move more around the house, skip around the garden or do a circuit of the park during your lunch break! Look for pockets of time throughout your day when you can simply walk and add in some extra steps.

4. EQUIP YOURSELF

Get staple pieces of equipment at home - you do not need a gym to workout! My go to pieces of home equipment for full body exercises are resistance bands and dumbbells.

5. DO SOMETHING YOU LOVE

Find something you love when starting out. Experiment with different types of exercise to see what you enjoy most. This may be HIIT, strength, pilates, yoga, running, walking, dance, cycling, swimming or something else. There are so many options to explore. Life is far too short to dread movement so we need to embrace what our amazing bodies can allow us to do and find joy in movement.

THE FINAL WORD

It may not be perfect every day or every week because life happens and perfection doesn’t exist. It’s a cliche, but starting really is the hardest part; once you’re in and you’ve felt how great you feel after moving, then it will become a habit and part of your day.
